Recycling and Composting
In the Dining Facilities
Dining Services is committed to environmental stewardship through such programs as local purchasing in Ohio, pre- and post-consumer organic recycling, eco-friendly and compostable containers and utensils, recycling fryer oil into biodiesel, and tray-less and bag-free service. You can help us save landfills and prevent pollution by minimizing waste, recycling packaged products, bringing your own bag, and visiting with your reusable coffee mug (we’ll fill it up for the price of a small!).
In the Residence Halls
It is easy to underestimate the amount of usable items thrown away at the end of Ohio State's autumn and spring semesters, when the majority of students are changing residency. Since 2004, we have supported Students for Recycling's Dump & Run event, collecting these items for a huge annual yardsale, reducing waste and raising funds for local charities and participating student organizations.
Also, through the green zone program, collection boxes are placed in each residence hall as a point of disposal for ink cartridges, cell phones, batteries and bottle caps.
Campus-wide
RecycleMania is a friendly nationwide competition to promote waste reduction activities on campus. The contest runs for eight weeks, generally every February-March. It was initiated in 2001 as a competition between Ohio University and Miami University; RecycleMania has grown rapidly, with more than 600 colleges and universities now participating.
